2016 GSSD Expo opens with call for greater South- South solidarity
Hosted by the Zayed International Foundation for the Environment on behalf of the Government of the UAE, the GSSD Expo 2016 was held in Dubai from 31 October to 3 November.
The eighth annual United Nations Global South-South Development Expo, hosted by the Zayed International Foundation for the Environment on behalf of the Government of the UAE was opened on 31st October 2016 in Dubai by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Media Incorporated at the Sheikh Rashid Hall of the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
HH Sheikh Maktoum was accompanied by HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum at the inauguration of the Expo, which attracted environment ministers from the UAE and other countries from the Global South, senior United Nations delegates, senior government officials and over 500 international delegates. The annual Expo, held under the auspices of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, is designed to enhance innovation and development among the participating countries with a view to achieving the United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development. This annual event highlighting Southern innovations in tackling southern poverty challenges was held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 31 October to 3 November.
Her Majesty Queen Noor Al Hussein of Jordan was the keynote speaker at the event and commenced her address by stating that “the UAE is a particularly suitable choice for hosting the GSSD Expo and enhancing innovation towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as it has distinguished itself as a developing country’s model for its significant, innovative achievements in sustainability.”
In her opening remarks, she also expressed her deep appreciation to the Zayed International Foundation for the Environment and its Chairman Dr. Mohammed Ahmed bin Fahd for hosting the event “in the extraordinary emirate of Dubai at a pivotal moment for global comments.”
