Emirates Appreciation Award for the Environment winners announced
Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and General Security, has been named the environmental personality for his outstanding contributions to promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development over the years.
Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO) was awarded the Industrial Enterprise Award.
The Abu Dhabi Council for Education was awarded the Educational Institution Award.
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) was awarded the Innovation and Research Award.
Enviroment and Protected Areas Authority (EPPA) in Sharjah and Azza Yousif Mohammad Al Awadi from the Ras Al Khaimah Educational Zone was awarded the Media and Public Awareness award.
Environmental Personality Award
Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and General Security, has been named the environmental personality for his outstanding contributions to promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development over the years.
H.E. Al Midfa highlighted the enormous contributions made toward the environmental cause by Lt. Gen. Tamim, who had taken a leading role in preserving wildlife and biodiversity and natural heritage of the UAE and developing regulations and directions of environmental sector in the country.
Dubai Police, under his leadership, became the first security firm to launch strategic environmental initiatives. He was the first to establish environmental administration in a security institution and also the first to call for a marine emergency plan and established a center for emergency management under the umbrella of the Dubai Police.
Lt. Gen. Tamim has also authored pioneering initiatives to combat air pollution and marine pollution in addition to planting large green areas on land and sea, as well as an initiative to establish Zayed International Prize for the Environment and an initiative to plant a million trees in Dubai. He has played an active role in pushing environmental legislation and strategies and adopting renewable energy and rationalizing water and electricity and the green economy of Dubai in particular and the UAE in general.
Industrial Enterprise Award
Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO) was adjudged the winner of this award due to the following reasons:
- A company with a long history in the production of oil and gas from marine fields.
- Achieved 90% of the zero burning strategy of associated gas in marine fields.
- Committed to the national laws and regulations and developing outstanding evidences of practice, in addition to compliance with the requirements of laws and international treaties and conventions.
- Distinct programmes and projects in environmental sustainability to reduce carbon footprint, reduce emissions and manage hazardous waste.
- A variety of initiatives in environmental awareness and community activities that aim to sustainability of environment and protection of natural resources.
Educational Institution Award
The Abu Dhabi Council for Education has won the award for its Sustainable Schools Initiative. The “Sustainable Schools Initiative” began with 23 schools in Abu Dhabi and has evolved into 103 schools after it was adopted by the Ministry of Education . In its experience, the initiative relies on the following:
- School-capacity building in the field of auditing and monitoring the environmental impacts and managing them in the best possible techniques, and enabling students to communicate with the community.
- Offering the opportunity for teachers to learn new techniques and skills to pass on environmental education into the classroom, and introduce students to different environments through environmental field trips.
- Strive to develop the concept of green schools and establishing the values of preservation of the environment and the rationalizing consumption that contributes to achieve the educational sustainable environment.
Invention, Innovation and Environmental Research Award
it is given to an innovation or an invention or a research that has been applied or is applicable and has a clear environmental impact that contributes to solving environmental problem or problems, or to conserving natural resources and energy.
This award was given to Dubai Electricity and Water Authority that has achieved the following innovations:
- Developing the air moisture technology to increase the electricity production efficiency from power generators. This technique was used in two stations and resulted in:
a) Cutting CO2 by 32, 843 tons/year and 46,788 tons/year and reduction of NOx by 172 tons/year and 259 tons / year
b) Reducing fuel consumption by 94,715 tons/year and 143,130 tons/year
Siemens manufacturer of power generators benefited from this technology to increase the efficiency of energy production and to reduce global warming gases.
Media and Environmental Awareness Award
This award is given to an institution or a person with innovative business that has an environmental impact and that contributes to solving environmental problems or conserving natural resources and energy.
The prize is awarded jointly to:
1 - Environment and Natural Reserves Authority - Sharjah
2 - Ms. Azza Youssef Mohammed Al Awadi, a teacher at Ras Al Khaimah Educational Zone
Environment and Natural Reserves Authority - Sharjah won this award on account of the implementation of:
A variety of programs based on the multiplicity of environmental awareness activities, which included:
a) Environmental awareness campaigns to conserve the environments of marine, coastal and wild areas.
b) Local and international educational and training workshops.
c) Intellectual and scientific symposia and seminars, and the local and federal awareness programs.
d) Creating environmental reserves and clubs and voluntary environmental committees.
e) The initiative of summer training program in the environmental field for schools students, which lasted for more than ten years.
As a teacher, Ms. Azza Yusuf Mohamed Al Awadi created an environmental programme to introduce students to different environments through environmental field trips as (eco-friendly) in order to:
a) Raise the level of environmental positive behavior among students.
b) Strengthen the role of education in serving sustainable environment.
c) Increase students’ awareness of the importance of preserving the environment on the earth.
d) Support the science curriculum with field classroom and nonclassroom features and activities.
The Emirates Appreciation Award for the Environment rewards those who contribute to sustainable development through best environmental practice, research and innovation, capacity building, education and raising environmental awareness.
The Award, which is worth AED 1 million in prize money, will be divided equally between the five categories. Each winner will also receive a trophy and a certificate.
